Jane Street: Software Developer Summer Internship

Candidates for the dev role should have:

  • Top-notch programming skills
  • Deep experience with—and love for—technology. There’s no specific checklist; we use software to approach a variety of problems, so we’re interested in everything from machine learning to systems administration to programming language design
  • Strong interpersonal skills. Software development at Jane Street is highly collaborative, and we are looking for people who can work effectively in small, close-knit teams

We don’t expect candidates to have experience with functional programming, OCaml, or finance; we’re happy to hire talented developers and teach them what they need to know.

Interns are given the opportunity to engage in software and research projects that have real and lasting impact.  Just this year, interns have:

  • Improved the propagation algorithm behind an internal parallel/incremental compute engine
  • Written high performance code for decoding market data from US exchanges
  • Added optimizations to the OCaml compiler to eliminate unnecessary allocations of short-lived objects, as part of a larger project to improve OCaml’s inliner
  • Written a tool to efficiently estimate the risk of a continuously changing portfolio in a market crash

Interns work on at least two projects in different areas, collaborating closely with full time developers. They also spend part of their internship in our New York office.  Interns also have access to many classes and lectures, including a speaker series that brings in some of the world’s top speakers on a broad array of topics.

Quantitative Trader summer internship

About the Role

Interns at Jane Street have the opportunity to learn about market making, trading and pricing financial derivatives. You will likely split your internship between two different trading desks, ensuring you gain exposure to at least two asset classes and work on at least two different projects. All of our interns will spend several weeks in one of our overseas offices, participating in further training and orientation.

With the guidance of an experienced trader, you will spend your days solving trading-related problems using your programming skills and personal insights. Some intern projects are on the more technical side, for example you might build a new monitoring system that will alert traders to interesting situations in the marketplace. Other internship projects focus on modelling, and as you might spend time looking at a new way to model an ADR or an option for example, you might also try to adjust aspects of current models at Jane Street that need improvement. As an intern, you might work on historical studies of market data to come up with new trading strategies, you may be involved with building infrastructure that will allow you to test data and run simulations, helping traders determine if a new trading strategy is worth pursuing.

Alongside your project work, you will participate in structured classroom learning and mock trading, where both trading theory and practice are covered.

Required Skills and Traits

  • You will hold at least a Bachelor’s degree in a quantitative subject.
  • You will have a strong interest and aptitude for programming.
  • You will be excellent quantitatively, with a good understanding of probability and statistics.
  • You will have the ability to work in close knit teams in a highly pressured environment.

Strong communication skills and the ability to explain complex technical issues in plain terms are vital to succeed in this position
