Summer School on Applications of Wireless Sensor Networks

Telematics, telemedicine, environmental monitoring, home applications and control, security and surveillance, industrial applications like process industry automation and agricultural applications are examples of potential applications of wireless sensor networks. Thanks to its broad range of possible applications and potential to change the way we interact with our environment, wireless sensor networks have gained a lot of attention in the research world and are becoming increasingly popular in business world as well. The goal of this summer school is to:

  • survey the most relevant research domains
  • present various perspectives and underlying technologies
  • discuss integration of sensor information into applications
  • identify the most important challenges and research themes
  • interact with distinguished scholars and establish contacts that may lead to research collaborations in the future.

The intended audience are post-graduate students, PhD students, and young researchers from universities and industrial laboratories around the world. We expect about 40 participants.

  • PROGRAM (tentative)
The summer school will last for 5 days and will feature a number of different activities
Lectures: Each day will feature lectures and discussions around a research theme like integration of WSN with mobile networks, security in WSN, ZigBee vs. Bluetooth, remote health monitoring, integration of context information delivered by sensors into applications, etc. Lecturers include prof. Ivan Stojmenovic (University of Ottawa), prof. David Simplot-Ryl (University of Lille), Konrad Wrona (SAP Research), Srdjan Krco (Ericsson Ireland), Vlasios Tsiatis (Ericsson Research).
  • Participants Workshop: All participants will have an opportunity to present their own work and involvement in the field.
  • Application Competition: Participants can submit their ideas about application scenarios involving sensor networks and smart objects.
  • Design and development paradigms: Introduction to design and programming of wireless sensor network applications.
  • Social activities: One day is scheduled for an excursion; a dinner party will be organized as well as other social activities, which should help to form a community among the young researchers.

VENUE

The summer school will take place at the Faculty of Technical Sciences (http://www.ftn.ns.ac.rs), University of Novi Sad (http://www.ns.ac.rs), Serbia and Montenegro. Novi Sad (http://www.gradnovisad.org.rs) is a beautiful and friendly city, where citizens, cheerful and in the good mood, welcome you honestly, sincerely and friendly. It is an university, economic and cultural centre ("Athens of Serbia"), located on the banks of the Danube river in the northern part of Serbia, 80km from Belgrade and 100km from the Serbia-Hungary border, easily accessible by air (Belgrade or Budapest airports), car, train or bus. Beautiful Petrovaradin fortress, located on a hill above the Danube river, the "Gibraltar on the Danube" as it used to be called, is the venue of the EXIT, one of the biggest music festivals in Europe, and the main city landmark. University campus is located on the opposite bank of the river and has an easy access to sandy river beaches as well as city centre and other amenities. National park Fruska Gora, a mountain located nearby the city, provides an excellent opportunity for long walks in beautiful surroundings. It also hosts a number of old ortodox monasteries which are worth visit.

REGISTRATION, COSTS and TRAVELLING

Participation is open to all qualified applicants, but the number of participants is limited to a maximum of 40. If we receive more applications, we will select participants based on their work area and background, geographic distribution, and date of registration.
