OS3SA2 - Control Systems 2

Course specification
Course title Control Systems 2
Acronym OS3SA2
Study programme Electrical Engineering and Computing
Module Signals and Systems
Type of study bachelor academic studies
Lecturer (for classes)
Lecturer/Associate (for practice)
Lecturer/Associate (for OTC)
ESPB 6.0 Status mandatory
Condition None.
The goal Introduce students to concepts of frequency domain evaluation of linear systems. Present the methods of single-loop continuous and digital control design in the frequency domain and state-space.
The outcome Students are able to: analyze properties of single-input single-output systems in frequency domain, specify parameters of control design, choose appropriate continuous/digital controllers, tune the controllers, create appropriate digital control laws for application in embedded hardware.
Contents of lectures Frequency domain characterization of single-input single-output systems. Closed-loop stability and performance requirements. Continuous control design by loop shaping. Dead-time compensation. Root locus analysis. Optimal control in state-space. Design and implementation of digital controllers.
Contents of exercises Frequency characteristics: construction and analysis. Basic and advanced frequency domain control techniques. Proportional, lead-lag, PI and PID controllers. Smith predictor. Root locus analysis. Optimal state-space controllers. Digital controllers: choice of sampling period, discretization, dead-beat and Dahlin controller, implementation of digital control laws.
