Course specification
Course title Thermal Processes in Electrical Power Components
Acronym 19E014TPE
Study programme Electrical Engineering and Computing
Module Power Engineering
Type of study bachelor academic studies
Lecturer (for classes)
Lecturer/Associate (for practice)
Lecturer/Associate (for OTC)
ESPB 6.0 Status elective
Condition None.
The goal To show how to use the knowledge from general heat transfer theory to the design, operation, monitoring and protection of electrical power components. Fundamentals of the electrical heating, i.e. of conversion of electrical energy to heat: resistive, induction, dielectric and electric arc. Fundamentals of electric furnaces, power converters and connection to the grid.
The outcome To train students to be able to apply basic het transfer theory in practical problems in electric power engineering. Understanding the approach via empirical methods and their limitations. Understanding possibilities opened by using modern software tools, based on detailed modeling of physical heating processes.
Contents
Contents of lectures Practical applications–design and operation (theory and the practical-catalogues, standards and empirical design equations): power converters, transformers, self-supporting cable bundle, laying the cable in soil.Measuring methods, the temperature sensors and the devices.Conversion from electrical energy to the heat – theoretical background (Pointing theorem).Elements of electrical heating plants.
Contents of exercises Problem solving classes and 6 laboratory exercises (direct resistive, induction resistive, dielectric and arc heating, Peltier elements, and FUZZY temperature control.
