The goal Introduce students to the basic concepts and functions of power system operation. Introduce students to the notions related to open (free) market and deregulated power systems. Familiarise students with concepts of security, reliability, quality and economics and explain their significance in power system operation.
The outcome Provide students with the ability to design optimisation algorithms, algorithms for security analysis and algorithms related to problems in electricity market oriented power systems. Provide students with the ability to their implementation in power system operation.
    Contents
Contents of lectures Operation characteristics of system elements. Analytical functions of operation planning. Economical aspects of power system operation. Unit scheduling and unit commitment problems. Optimal power flow. Real time operation functions. Power system security. Ancillary services. Transmission system services in open electricity market. Congestions within power networks – relaxation and elimination.
Contents of exercises Modeling of system components. Application of optimization algorithms to unit commitment, economic dispatch and optimal power flow. Development of algorithms for the contingency analysis and of vertically integrated and deregulated power systems. Tariffs calculation in deregulated transmission systems. Congestion relaxation and elimination within power networks.
