The goal Overview of modern radio - systems. Basic characteristics and basic network concepts of modern radio networks. Public land mobile networks ( 2G, 2.5G, 3G, 3.5G, 4G, 5G, 6G) are considerd in more details. Basic design principles for certain types of radio networks (mobile, special purpose, broadcasting).
The outcome Students should know the basic characteristics of the radio interfaces and the core networks of the most modern radio systems. In the case of public mobile systems, student should understand the basic call procedures and technical solutions of the system organization. Additionally, the student should master the basic design principles of the most important radio systems.

Contents of lectures Overview, basic principles and characteristics of modern radio systems. Public land mobile networks. GSM. GPRS. EDGE. UMTS. HSPA/HSPA+/MC-HSPA. LTE, 5G, 6G. TETRA. Wireless Personal Area Networks – WPAN. Broadcasting systems.
Contents of exercises LAB: GSM simulator. Measuring the basic parameters of GSM system using dedicated measurement system. Practicing on a portable eRapid LTE system for critical communications.

  1. GSM/ETSI recommendations
  2. 3GPP recommendations.
  3. Training documentation of leading manufacturers ( Ericsson, Nokia, Huawei, Cisco, …)
  4. Published papers, projects, extracts from several books.

Methods of teaching Lectures and numerical exercises are conducted through PowerPoint presentations and by using blackboard. Practical classes are held in the laboratory and include practical demonstrations and independent student exercises.
