The goal To introduce students to analysis of basic topologies of dc/dc switch-mode converters and dc/ac switch-mode inverters. To perform a comparative analysis of these topologies from the standpoint of mains and load power quality. To introduce students to basic principles and techniques of pulse width modulation, harmonic distortion analysis and output voltage filtration.
The outcome Students should understand principles of operation of dc/dc switch-mode converters and single- and three-phase switch-mode inverters. Based on the obtained knowledge and for given operating conditions, students should be able to choose the appropriate topology of a dc/dc switch-mode converter and a dc/ac switch-mode inverter.

Contents of lectures Basic dc/dc switch-mode converter topologies: buck, boost, buck-boost. Isolated converters: forward, flyback and diagonal half-bridge converters. Multiphase dc/dc switch-mode converters. Single- and three-phase switch-mode inverters, harmonic distortion analysis and inverter output voltage filtration. Basic principles of pulse width modulation, PWM voltage-source inverters. Multilevel inverters.
Contents of exercises Analysis of the operation of the switch-mode dc/dc converters and PWM voltage-source inverters, based on measurements on laboratory prototypes of the converters.
