The goal Introducing students to components, systems and techniques in modern photonic communications. Gaining knowledge in modeling photonic components and systems. Mastering methods for designing and modeling optical links and networks. Course objective is to help students to easily and efficiently enroll in scientific research in this topic.
The outcome Training students to upgrade the knowledge in order to get perspective of more advanced aspects of photonic communications, which are based on complex integration and interaction between it's components and systems, as well as on advanced techniques for broadcast control, compensation of signal degradation, increase of the bit rate, modeling and designing of signal propagation in optical networks.
Contents of lectures Modal theory of planar and circular dielectric waveguides. Dispersion and attenuation effects in fibers. Dispersion control Transmitters - laser gain, types of feedback mechanisms and dynamical characteristics. Photodetectors. Noise. Optical amplifiers. Bragg gratings. Optical filters. WDM components and systems. Time and code multiplexing. Soliton systems. Coherent systems. Modulation formats.
