The goal Introducing students with principles of propagation of optical waves in different media. Understanding of duality of wave and photon nature of light. Principles of modern optical telecommunications. Understanding optical wave propagation in optical fibbers. Make students capable to solve different problems in geometrical and physical optics.
The outcome Solving different problems in geometrical and physical optics. Calculation of the parameters of optical fibers (number of possible modes, losses and dispersion in fibers etc)
Contents of lectures Wave equation in homogeneous and non-homogeneous media. Eikonal equation and Fermat principle of least time. Fresenel coefficients. Evanescent waves. Planar dielectric wave guide. TEm and TMm modes. Step- and gradient fibers. TEOm, TMOm, EHvm, HEvm and LPpm modes. Fundamental LP01 mode. Losses in fibers. Wave-, profile- and polarization dispersion. Nonlinear effects in optical fibers..
