The goal Introduce the students to modern ICT systems.
The outcome The students will be able to read technical specifications and solve simple practical problems. They will be able to design a typical wired network. They will understand the most important L2 technologies; they will program network applications in free software tools; they will program a microcontroller and produce a technical report.

Contents of lectures Selected chapters in ICT: information retrieval, machine learning, personalized services and applications, web search. Networking applications programming. Interface between physical and virtual realms. Communications hardware programming.
Contents of exercises Network installation project. Work in GNU Octave, Python, Weka, and LaTeX2e. MSP430 microcontroller programming. Active network equipment configuration.
